Thalassotherapy: The Healing Powers of the Ocean

The sea has a relaxing effect on people. It is known that seawater and the marine environment provide a good feeling, healing effect and a positive effect on the well-being of individuals.

The concept of Thalassotherapy, which means “Thalassa” in Greek, officially emerged in 1867 but evidence has shown thalassotherapy was practised around the globe by the ancient Romans and Egyptians, the Mayans and the Indonesians. For centuries we looked to the sand and surf as a fully-stocked pharmacy, in fact doctors used to prescribe sun and sea to help improve circulation and contract tumors.

Beginning in the late 16th century, English physicians endorsed the healing effects of cold water for everything from heat stroke to melancholy. It was believed that a brisk shock of cold water stimulated the entire body, promoting the circulation of humors and even contracting tumors. 18th-century physicians and scientists looked back to the classical texts of Hippocrates and Celsus and revived the medical practice of drinking seawater (classically sweetened with honey, or, as the British for some reason preferred it, diluted with milk). The regimens also usually involved bathing in seawater to strengthen and invigorate the body.

The miracle of the sea seemed to provide infinite therapies. First appearing up and down the British coast and then spreading to the Continent, seaside resorts offered a kind of holistic self-improvement retreat where the mind, body and soul were treated simultaneously and with equal attention. By 1911 there were more than 100 seaside resorts in England and Wales alone, according to The English Seaside Resort: A Social History.

Now we look to Thalassotherapy treatments to replenish, re-mineralize, and revitalize to enhance good health and offer relaxation for mind, body and soul. Ocean therapy has evolved to treat rheumatism, arthritis, joint troubles and injuries, as well as to promote beauty, anti-aging and to target chronic skin conditions. And we have Seaflora, an award winning product lines that harness this healing power to create high quality formulas to bring the Sea to your Skin.
